Two videos on Network Coverage in Bungoma and Kitui Counties, and in Turkana and Marsabit

Thanks Twahir for crunching the numbers for us. I think we assume that USF is meant to provide support to projects in areas that do not make economic sense to most providers.

The purpose of the Fund is to support widespread access to ICT services, promote capacity building and innovation in ICT services in the country….
The Fund, currently being put in place, is expected to finance national projects that have significant impact on the availability and accessibility of ICTs in rural, remote and poor urban areas. ca.go.ke/industry/universal-access/purpose-of-the-fund/

The selection criteria will shed light on why Turkana (marginalized) got zero support, while Machakos had the lion\’s share.
Purpose of the Fund – Communications Authority of Kenya<ca.go.ke/industry/universal-access/purpose-of-the-fund/>
The Kenya Communications (Amendment) Act, 2009, provides for the establishment of a Universal Service Fund (USF), administered and managed by the Communications Authority of Kenya. The purpose of the Fund is to support widespread access to ICT services, promote capacity building and innovation in ICT services in the country. The sources of the Fund include […]

Bwana Wambua,

Thanks for the update, greatly appreciated.

I have a few queries though, I took the liberty to analyse the data and below are my observations (based on population data from Census 2009<en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counties_of_Kenya>): –

1. What criteria was used to select the schools?
2. There appears to be a disproportionate allocation, with some counties receiving much more than others yet atleast one county receiving none.

See anaylsis on this LINK<docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KzvbBqyDi9Mv-pu6c5bVDm1wYVJM-O1COJvj9mG7K5Q/edit?usp=sharing>.

Greetings Bwana Wambua,

We are eagerly waiting for the feedback as you promised. On another note, is there a planned phase two for the USF Project considering the success of phase 1?

Best regards

Hi Barrack,

You have a good memory. I was flaging the issue.

The locations connected to the Internet by USF were shared by the indefatigable Mr Wambua. However, the information on the Schools and other amenities connected was not shared. This is what Liz is asking about.

Below is the information CA provided

\”Grace,

Below are the 62 sub-locations that have benefited from the mobile voice infrastructure project executed through the USF. We shall share the information on the beneficiary schools of the Education Broadband Connectivity Project through our website as soon as possible.

This is really great. Congratulations @ CA and the USF team.

Could you please provide some details on the number of schools, public libraries, hospitals and other community service locations connected to the Internet through USF? Are they open to the public?

Indeed. I confirm that connectivity in my counties (Kilifi and Lamu) has tremendously improved. Credit should indeed go to CA and the last mile service providers.

Hi GG,

Many thanks for the Video. I wish to commend the Communications
Authority and the Service Providers for a great job in so far as
Universal Access is confirmed. Over the past week i have been to
Chawiya location (5000 feet hills in Wundanyi Taita Taveta) and
Mwatate in Taita and was able to Watch news and entertain myself
using my smartphone a testament of how far we have connected our
country. I was amazed by the Infrastructure (roads and power) that has
been extended to the top of the hills which has really transformed
lives. The excitement in the eyes of the youth could tell it all. From
Taita i moved on to Mombasa, Kilifi and Malindi and the connectivity
is simply amazing to say the least. I have actually streamed this
videos without any buffering. In conclusion Communication Network
Coverage has greatly improved and as the DG says in the Video the
journey of 1000 steps indeed starts with one step. Well done CA, well
done service poviders.

Best Regards
