Invitation to the Global South Alliance’s Open Meeting – 22nd October 2024

Dear Listeners,

This year, the *Global South Alliance* launched and disbursed funds to the
first cohort of the *Datafication and Democracy Fund (DDF)*. This
initiative aims to support organizations in the Global South that are
working to address pressing issues at the intersection of datafication and
democracy.

Formed in 2022 through collaborative efforts between Paradigm Initiative,
Aapti Institute, and Data Privacy Brasil, the *Global South Alliance seeks *to
unify NGOs dedicated to promoting mutual learning and advancing digital
rights from a Global South perspective. In addition to the founding
organizations, ten others from Asia, Africa, and Latin America,
including *Asociación
por los Derechos Civiles, Bolo Bhi, Center for Communication Governance,
CIPESA, Derechos Digitales, Digital Rights Foundation, Internet Bolívia,
KICTANET, Pollicy, and Research ICT Africa*, are members of the Alliance.

Every quarter, the Alliance convenes open meetings that welcome all
stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions. *The next session is
scheduled for 22nd October 2024*. In this 1.5-hour meeting, grantees of the
2024 Datafication and Democracy Fund—representing five organizations from
Africa, Latin America, and Asia—will share their research findings on
several critical issues:

– Faces and Rights: An Analysis of Biometric Datafication in Migration
Regularization
– Sports, Data, and Rights: The Use of Facial Recognition in Brazilian
Stadiums
– Connecting Contemporary Datafication Practices to the Casteist and
Colonial History of Biometric Datafication in 19th and 20th Century India
– Bridging Data Governance Gaps in Africa’s Electioneering Processes: A
Case of Kenya and Nigeria
– Rethinking the Framework for Child Online Protection in Nigeria (and

In addition, we will discuss what to expect from the second phase of the
