Communications Authority could force Safaricom to share agents\’ network

Dennis

I’m hoping someone has been misquoted. This is nonsense. And I’m deliberately not mincing my words here.

My points below:-

1. Firstly, it’s de facto that mobile money agents have become Telco agnostic. It’s in the interest of everyone that these guys have multiple revenue streams. The margins for being only a Safaricom Mobile Money Agent wouldn’t make commercial sense otherwise. That\’s why you sometimes find agents saying ‘Sina Float’

2. Commercially it makes sense to share Telco masts. In fact Airtel sold its towers to Helios. www.heliostowers.com/about-us/who-we-are/.

See story on the sale below:-

I ask, what is the problem the regulator is trying to solve that the market is already not addressing.

I’m worried at the creeping of too much regulation in this country. We need to ask ourselves whether we are a free market or a controlled market.
