Trolls exploit Zoom privacy settings as app gains popularity

I guess after privacy concerns were raised, Zoom has now updated its iOS app so that it will not share user data with FB. It is appalling that even those who have no fb accounts were not spared of their data being harvested. And this happened without their consent.

In response \”Zoom will still give users the option to sign in to the app using Facebook, but will now do so by requiring the user to log in through a web browser. The company says that the data collection was not intended, but an oversight in its desire to make logging into its app convenient for its users\”.

Responding to backlash, Zoom stops sharing user data with facebook:

Guys

Privacy First is the new business model. Zoom has just been sued for not protecting its users\’ privacy.

Zoom sued.<www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6650676387109748736/>

Here\’s also a report on Privacy First Business Models<digitalfuturesociety.com/reports/business-models-and-solutions-that-reinforce-trust-transparency-and-privacy-among-users-and-between-organisations/> that KICTANet participated in last year in September. Bottom line?

You can run a profitable company without a surveillance business model.

In the wake of covid 19, many organizations had to ask workers to operate from home. And to keep tabs on work being performed by employees from home, many organizations have embraced zoom meetings. In fact, Zoom has become so popular in the last two weeks. But are you aware that the default settings of the service are configured in the expectation of trust between participants?

This means that trolls can wreak havoc. Some zoombombers have used the screen sharing feature to broadcast pornography and violent imagery. Further, security experts have noted the file transfer feature that is switched on by default could be used to spread malware.

And in a related article \”Zoom\’s privacy policy isn\’t explicit about the data transfer to Facebook at all\”, it is reported that the Zoom app notifies Facebook when the user opens the app, details on the user\’s device such as the model, the time zone and city they are connecting from. In addition, which phone carrier they are using, and a unique advertiser identifier created by the user\’s device. This can be used by companies to target a user with advertisements. For those hosting large, public group meetings, it is recommended that hosts change their settings so that only the host can share their screen.
